Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport: Wal-mart of hay industry

Culture Warrior has its roots in the Lone Star state. We were of course, born at Rudyards in Houston on a November night not too long ago (if you’re ever at Rudz on a night a band is playing be sure to meet the girl taking the cover.) Anyway, we have nothing but love in hearts as we bring you this next item. Reports KHOU-TV in Houston:

Ask any rancher these days, hay is hard to find. But thousands of bales are now coming from an unlikely source. Not a farm. But Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The first cut was in October when a contractor rolled more than 2,000 bales. The airport made $10.50 off each one for a total of almost $25,000.

And this will get even funnier and more endearing after the jump.

Just so we’re clear… this hay is being bailed from the grass cuttings along the runways. they have tractors running up and down, cutting the grass. Then a bailer comes and, well. That’s that.

The Houston Airport System says it could conceivably become the largest hay producer in Texas. “Yes, a typical big operation in hay is like 500 acres and we’re talking about putting two to three thousand out there,” Houston Airport System Director Richard Vacar explained. “So we could be a little bit of the Wal-Mart of the hay business.”

Wal-Mart? Don’t sell yourself short, Houston Airport System. Looks like we’re talking more like Whole Foods:

The airport is actually grooming its grounds to grow high quality horse hay, also known as Tifton 85 grass.

They think they can get $1 million a year for the this quality shit. But the sky’s the limit. If they go down to the sewers and put it some UV lights, they could start themselves a nice crop of the chronic.
