Marching Orders Dept.
Echo Chamber, Anyone?

Alive and well

The other day, I made a little joke over at Wonkette about being dead that raised some ire among some self-righteous conservative folks. They took a break from pretending not to get erect from hate speech long enough to produce pages and pages of Technorati listings. All the big names are there (Malkin, LGF, Althouse) and lots of little ones, in no particular order, after the jump.

Update: Since we’ve suddenly become so popular with a whole new crowd, I’ve added a section of blogroll to link to our new friends as their referrals come in. Thanks guys, and welcome to the Culture Warrior family!

From all of this outrage, you would think I actually took a shot at the guy.

“The other day, I made a little joke over at Wonkette about John Roberts being dead that raised some ire among some self-righteous conservative folks. They took a break from pretending not to get erect from hate speech long enough to produce pages and pages of Technorati listings.”

Why is it “self-righteous conservative folks”? I do not find it self-righteous to be insulted by such a crass comment. Also, one does not have to be conservative to be turned off by that sort of writing.

I personally do not get “erect” from hate speech on either side of the isle. I think if you are trying to make a point about something, that point is better understood and more respected if you leave the hate speech out.

Here are a few examples of what conservatives had to say when Democrat Senator Johnson suffered his stroke:

“Keep Senator Johnson in your thoughts and prayers. Unlike many on the left we wish no harm to anybody in office regardless of their party affiliation.” - Webloggin

I realize the added comment “Unlike many on the left” may offend you but your comment regarding John Roberts actually proves that statement to be correct. It is unfortunate, but true.

“I feel so bad for his family. For this to happen to begin with is tragic, but for it to happen just weeks before Christmas makes it so much more difficult. I pray that Senator Johnson comes out of this ok.” - Wizbang

“Please pray for the Senator.” - The HILL Chronicles

These are just a few of the conservative comments relating to Johnson’s illness. It would be nice to see the same from your side, rather than your “jokes”.

Okay. Let’s get one thing straight: hate speech is not the same thing as hate or ire. From the American Heritage Dictionary:

NOUN: Bigoted speech attacking or disparaging a social or ethnic group or a member of such a group.

Speech that shows discontent towards individuals or political parties is not, I repeat, NOT hate speech. To say it is devalues people who have been at the short end of racist and bigoted speech.

I can’t help but think that this sudden use of the term “hate speech” for something as idiotic as Internet banter and chatter is somehow connected to the conservative backlash to the proposed Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007. It’s almost as the conservative base decided it can’t neuter what hate speech stands for, so it tries to manipulate the definition so as to corral the masses against the liberal base. It’s ridiculous, and I personally find this redefinition more offensive than any joke that Wonkette could ever publish.

Actually I used the term “hate speech” because that is what was referenced in the original post:

“They took a break from pretending not to get erect from hate speech long enough to produce pages and pages of Technorati listings.”

So you see, I wasn’t manipulating anything; I was merely referencing something that was said on this leftist site.

However, I would describe wishing one dead - hateful. But hey, if you guys on the left think that it is fine and consider such statements as a “joke”, more power to you.

  4. Chester says:

I can copy + paste posts all day long too, but it doesn’t do away with context. Just because “hate speech” is typed out doesn’t mean that what he wrote is an example of it. Add to that, this newfound definition has gained prominence by (specifically) O’Reilly and other conservative pundits as of late.

You know what, I’ll concede that “wishing one dead” (and I didn’t even use CtrlP or CtrlV) is hateful. Lots of jokes are. It’s a matter of taste. Do you want to make the generalization that liberals have bad taste? Go ahead; you already do.

In any case, my only contention was that what was said isn’t hate speech. See?

Thanks for the link! Even if you hate me.

    Aw.

    We don’t hate; we’re a “love blog.”

I’m far from being a right-wing nutcase; I’m a pretty far left political cartoonist in Louisiana. I simply thought your joke was in poor taste.

  8. Greg says:

sorry greg, i didn’t mean to lump you in there… we don’t actually read the things people say about us. we moved you up into a more approporate section. and you know, keep up the good work and stuff.
